You are 20 years old now and in your second year of college. Recently, you were diagnosed with FSGS, a rare kidney disease.

You are overwhelmed, scared, don’t really know what to do and wonder, “How did this happen to you?” You don’t know where to start, what to do next and it’s all happening so fast. You had a plan to finish college in the next couple of years, but now you’re wondering if that will ever happen.

I am here to tell you that you will accomplish and achieve everything you’ve always dreamed of and more!

I would like to share some words of wisdom and encouragement to help you through this time:

Seek out as many organizations that you can that specifically focus on FSGS, like NephCure. You will connect with people that are going through similar experiences and learn about your kidney disease and other treatment options.
Yes, there are other treatment options besides dialysis! Dialysis should NOT be your first treatment option.
Research clinical trials and be open-minded. You are so detail-oriented and inquisitive; I know you will make the best decision for you.

Being diagnosed with this rare kidney disease will take you on a journey that you never imagined. At times, your ups and downs will feel like you are on an emotional roller coaster, going half crazy about how rare kidney disease was not part of “The Plan.” You will feel alone sometimes, but don’t forget that your mom and dad will be your biggest support system.

You will have good days and not-so-great days, but I am here to tell you that these times will contribute tremendously to the woman you will become. It will make you stronger, wiser and you will develop a passion for something that will take you places you never dreamed of. Out of the blue this new passion comes, and you will be more determined than you have ever been.

Everything that has happened and what’s to come is all part of God’s plan and you will learn to trust the process. It may be hard to believe right now and tough to hear, but when you get older, you wouldn’t change any of it!
